Solomon Adodo

The NYCN is the official and recognized voice of the Nigerian Youth on policy governance with regards youth related issues.

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) was established in 1964. It is charged with policy formulation and implementation on issues bordering on youth development in Nigeria. It is the umbrella body and the mouthpiece of the Nigerian Youth. It was established and given legal recognition in 1990. The NYCN has three branches, the National, Zonal and the State chapters.

THE NATIONAL YOUTH COUNCIL OF NIGERIA

The NYCN is charged with policy formulation and implementation on issues bordering on youth development in Nigeria. It is the umbrella body and the mouthpiece of the Nigerian Youth.

Re-oritentation on Patriotism and Good Morals

We set the tone for the year by calling on the youth to maintain patriotism and build partnership with government as the prime foundation for accelerated development. This was contained in the New year address of the BYCN. We commenced our 3-day inter faith fast on and closed with a call for moral rectitude among our youth

Planning Campaign

As part of the strategy of the council in combating climate change, we flagged off the Tree Planting Campaign with the symbolic planting of the National Unity Tree at the Unity Fountain Abuja on 1st January 2020

Potentials to Productitiy Project:

On 6th Januray 2020 on AITs Flagship prgram, PEople, Politics and Power – we commenced An aggressive media campaign for calling on the youth to look inward harness their potentials and translate same to productivity by utilizing the available vistas of opportunities made available by government.

KEY ACTIVITIES

Our Activities are centered on fully equipping the youth to adequately harness their potentials in all spheres of productive engagements.
Commemoration of the 2020 Armed Forces Day: To futher the spirit of patriotism among our military, the council held a preocssion and prayers in honor of our fallen Heroes. We also made several media appearances across radio and TV channels calling on the youth to give the government and the military the needed support to win the war against terrorisms n other forms of insecurity.
Building Partnerships with traditional Rulers for the productive engagement of rural youth. On 25th of January, we embarked on a working visit to he Palace of the Ona of Abaji and Chairman FCT council fo Traditional Rulers, HRM Alh. Adamu Baba Yunusa . our visit centered on exploring vistas of productively engaging rural youths, national peace, security and and harmonious coexistence geared at national development and economic growth and strategies for developing rural areas in bid to decongest the urban areas and curb crimes and isecurity.
 Students Trainings on Entrepreneurship and Productivity: The unemployment challenge has been exacerbated by the fact that the greater percentage of students earn go through school with the mindset of getting paid employment on graduation with just a micro few considering self employment options (entrepreneurship). Armed this fact, on 20th February, 2020, we commenced our Students Training on Entrepreneurship and Productivity Project (STEPP) in a session with members of Enactus (formerly known as Students in Free Enterprise - SIFE) from the University of Agriculture Makurdi. This was followed with training of students from other tertiary institutions including University of Abuja and Federal College of Education Zuba before the commencement of the national lockdown. Our trainings have yielded enormous results as most participants have ended up as entrepreneurs and job creators.
 Partnerships with Ministries, Departments and Agencies: To boost the efficiency of government bodies as pertain areas of their respective mandates which affect the youth, the Council embarked on a series of synergy building engagements with these MDAs. On 3rd March, 2020, we commenced with a visit to the National Bureau of Statistics to strategize on our partnership for efficient Data gathering; On 12th March, 2020, we met with the Management of the Rural Electrification Agency to draw up a partnership for exploring options of manufacturing solar panels and other electrical hardware by the youth to power mini industrial clusters in rural communities. The NYCN Leadership also met with the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission and a host of other MDAs. Thgese meetings granted the Council access to link youths with investment opportunities, funds (grants and loans) for enterprise and possible local and international markets. The resultant effect has been the direct creation of jobs through self employment with the accruing boost in the nations GDP
 Health Awareness Advocacy and Distribution of Palliatives: with the announcement of the spread of Covid-19 in Nigeria, the NYCN commence a robust campaign to curb its spread among the youth. Press Brieifings were held from 26th March and at other dates thereafter, social media campaigns were launched and outreaches embarked upon through the period of the lockdown the Council also reach out with palliatives to some section of youth across the country. The State Chapters also performed creditably well in reaching out to the youth with the lean resources they could muster. Branded face masks, sanitizers and other safety kits were also distributed to the youth.
National Office: On 12th June, 2020 the Council moved into a bigger Office Complex thus giving the Youth a unique address. The Office has also been furnished and receives all class of youth (with ideas and/or challenges) on a daily basis.
